Songs Recently on Repeat

Just for fun (and because what I was planning to post is like four pages long and not nearly ready for anyone else’s eyes), here are some songs I’ve been loving lately.

  • Through All of It by Colton Dixon (iTunes)

“I have won. I have lost. I got it right sometimes, but sometimes I did not. Life’s been a journey. I’ve seen joy; I’ve seen regret. Oh, and You have been my God through all of it.”

Yes, yes, You have.

On our late-night drive home from the river last week, my friend Lindsee asked me what songs I listened to in high school. Hmm…I don’t know. Whatever my friend Morgan was listening to, I guess. It turns out I’m easily influenced when it comes to music. I also tend to pick friends who love music, so it’s working for me. All that to say, Lindsee played me some songs by Kacey Musgraves during that car ride, and I’ve pretty much been listening to them ever since. Here are my two favorites:

  • Cup of Tea by Kacey Musgraves (iTunes)

“…and we’ve all got the right to be wrong…Nobody’s everybody’s favorite so you might as well just make it how you please…’Cause you can’t be everybody’s cup of tea. And why would you wanna be?”

  • Biscuits by Kacey Musgraves (iTunes)

“Mend your own fences, and own your own crazy.”

Kacey has a little bit of an attitude, but alas, so do I.

Later (like days later), I remembered some of what I listened to in high school. Garth Brooks was one of my favorites and still is. I actually used this song for a high school poetry project. Yep. Songs are poems.

  • The River by Garth Brooks (Amazon – Garth Brooks isn’t singing this one. It’s apparently very hard to find.)

And then there are these by Jillian Edwards. I discovered her all by myself. And I pretty much love everything about what she says and how she says it.

  • Songbird by Jillian Edwards (iTunes)
  • Sink My Feet by Jillian Edwards (iTunes)

Definitely didn’t find Ellie Holcomb on my own. I think my college roommate Marella first introduced me to her, and she later resurfaced in Katie and Kimi’s kitchen. Anyhow, she’s great:

  • Only Hope I’ve Got by Ellie Holcomb (iTunes)

“‘Cause I don’t wanna tell some arrogant story or let myself believe I’m You. I don’t wanna be a thief who’s stealing Your glory. Will You help remind me of what is true? The only hope I’ve got…is You.”

Oh, yes, Lord. Help remind us.

And for the days when we need to remember that God’s presence can be trusted even when it can’t be proven:

  • Silence by Joy Williams (iTunes)

And on the days when the fireflies come out and the faithfulness of God is on display, may we have our eyes open to see it:

  • Have Your Eyes Open by Christa Wells (feat. Ellie Holcomb) (iTunes)

My dad sent me this next one when I was in college, which I think makes me love it just a little bit more:

  • Dream Big by Ryan Shupe and The Rubberband (iTunes)

“When you cry be sure to dry your eyes ’cause better days are sure to come…And when you smile, be sure to smile wide…And when you laugh, be sure to laugh out loud ’cause it will carry all your cares away…And when you dream, dream big.”

Speaking of dads. Let’s talk about this song:

  • Good, Good Father by Housefires (iTunes)

Pretty sure that if songs were still on records, I’d have worn it right out.

And then there’s this one:

  • Captain by Hillsong UNITED (iTunes)

“Like the stars, Your Word will align my voyage, and remind me where I’ve been and where I am going.”

Yes. Just that.

Okay, now that we’ve established that I rarely discover music on my own, this is where I ask you to share yours. What are your favorites? Who are you listening to today?

Last night on the way home from Women’s Bible Study – I popped in a Bethel cd. I pretty much love everything they do. And I am not ashamed to say I didn’t find them on my own. I fell in love with “Good Shepherd” at the “Like a Girl” retreat. I went that Monday to Lifeway & purchased the “Brave” cd – and went back Tuesday to purchase “We Will Not Be Shaken.” This one played for me the entire way home, and again this morning on the way to work. I am no longer a slave to fear…I am a child of God. I am going to post the entire song lyrics here is I can – because it all speaks to me. I love the part where it says: You split the sea so I could walk right through it. All my fears were drowned in perfect love.” An emotion wove through me this morning: I can’t wait to get on the other side and listen to God singing over us. Can you imagine what a sweet, sweet sound that will be? If we weren’t dead already, we’d die from the glory. I had never gone there in my thoughts before. My dad loved choir, and would sing solos in church, but never once did he sing over me. I forgive him for being human. But I can’t wait until Abba God makes it up to me. I know it’s about his glory…but I know he will sing over us in the great beyond. He is a God of music. This is a perfect post for today, Cody. thank you for letting me share. You are AWESOME!
You unravel me, with a melody
You surround me with a song
    Of deliverance, from my enemies
Till all my fears are gone

    [Chorus]
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

    [Verse 2]
    From my mothers womb
    You have chosen me
    Love has called my name
I’ve been born again, into your family
Your blood flows through my veins

    [Interlude]
    I am surrounded
By the arms of the father
    I am surrounded
    By songs of deliverance
    We’ve been liberated
    From our bondage
Were the sons and the daughters
    Let us sing our freedom

    [Bridge]
    You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
All my fears were drowned in perfect love
    You rescued me
So I could stand and sing
    I am child of God
I am a Child of God
